Not Punch and Judy: The Chronicle and Story of an Experiment in Emergent Practice (2014)

Not Punch and Judy is a short film depicting the process of puppet-making and the story of how limiting beliefs can be formed, against a backdrop of questioning the domestic abuse portrayed in Punch and Judy shows.

I was curious to see what it would be like to imagine the characters uniting and, at the heart of it, I was wondering about my responsibility as an artist – what is okay to show in a public space? Why is violence so normalised? I was also feeling vulnerable about displaying my work and I wanted the film to capture that. The film was displayed in a contemporary Punch and Judy style theatre, which I designed and built, in the gallery at Grand Parade, University of Brighton in 2014. The puppets were stolen the day after the exhibition opened. You can watch the film here.
